2013 Favorites: #8. True Widow – Circumambulation
True Widow calls their music “stonegaze”, which isn’t a bad descriptor. Perched in a vacuum between stoner rock, shoegaze, and 90s bands like Low and Codeine, I’ve taken to calling them post-slowcore. True Widow take the cinematic approach of post-rock bands like Explosions in the Sky and marry it to a Southern Gothic vibe that is a heatstroke counterpoint to Low’s northern chill. And though Circumambulation isn’t as strong an album as their prior record, the absurdly titled As High as the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth, there are a handful of songs that are easily the best thing they’ve ever done.
