2013 Favorites: #7 SubRosa – More Constant Than the Gods
How do you follow up a beakthrough album? By learning what about it made it so, and building on that foundation. No Help For the Mighty Ones was my #12 album of 2011, and as I wrote then I was surprised a little that it ended up so low. But after hearing this new album, I realized what I wanted was more of the heavy, focused and fraught material; their cover of “House Carpenter” was beautiful and desolate, but the magic came when they brought that beauty and desolation to the deepest dankest doomy depths. More Constant Than the Gods does just that and more, and is easily the best doom record of 2013.
