2013 Favorites: #16. Yamantaka // Sonic Titan – UZU
As I wrote in my review for PopMatters, UZU works as an album much better than as a collection of songs. Outside of “One” and “Hall of Mirrors”, the songs lose a huge amount of their impact when heard out of context. But UZU as a whole is a stunning piece of art. I needed to take a break from it after writing the review, but returning to it weeks later let it make a fresh impression. I’m still impressed by the huge leap forward they’ve made over their debut, and as a singular piece of music UZU has loads to recommend it. Just give yourself the 40-odd minutes it requires; breaking it up does it no favors.
