Jess & The Ancient Ones

I was a little less enthusiastic than many of my friends about last year’s Jess & The Ancient Ones debut, mainly because I couldn’t get over her odd Laura Branigan pastiche. I did think there was promise once she found her voice.

Well, she still hasn’t quite found her own thing — there is a lot of Grace Slick in this performance — but I definitely dig where they’re going. The debut was yet another early 70s throwback hard and heavy record, while this track from an upcoming EP is aiming a few years earlier, to the hard rock sounds that emerged after the Summer of Love. It’s nice to have a late 60s retro-rock band for a change.
