22. Ancestors – In Dreams and Time
Ancestors are a band with a strange trajectory; starting out as crafters of epic stoner doom jams ala Sleep, morphing into retro late 60s/early 70s hard rockers, then into Pink Floyd circa 1971, and now are something perhaps all their own. All of the above still inform and color their work, but this record — like the previously mentioned Graveyard — is a synthesis of the past, of both their influences and their own short legacy. The closing cut, the above linked “First Light”, is their “Echoes”; an album side all by itself, with one of the best extended solos I’ve heard all year. The Obelisk named it their song of the year, and it just might be mine, too.
