Maximus the Mad

ff-365:

Fantastic Four #83 by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

Another quick thought, this one on Kirby. There is no light source that would cause the shadows you see across the left side of Maximus’ face. Where is that chin shadow coming from? Why can we see his left eye, so deep in the black? But what it does do is help illustrate his madness. The slight lip curl; the one eye so uncomfortably open the pupil is fully seen, the other heavy-lidded, deep in shadow; one eyebrow almost quizzically raised, the other set tight and stern. It’s Two-Face without the need for the acid burns. Not subtle, but perfect.
