Los Lobos’ Kiko is one of my favorite albums, one of only a handful of records I can’t imagine being without, and today the band released a remastered version that is absolutely gorgeous. Not that the original mastering by Bob Ludwig was at all faulty, but the clarity of this version when compared to the original cd is noticeable. The bonus demos and live cuts are nice, but they don’t make a perfect album any better.
Los Lobos is also releasing Kiko Live — a 2006 concert where they played the record from front to back — on cd, dvd and blu-ray. After listening to the remaster I’m sorely tempted to return to the store and get the blu-ray, because the cd comes as a free bonus with that edition. I figure a blu-ray for $7 is a good deal, even if I’ll rarely watch it.
