Killing Joke – Wardance (John Peel Session)
The Killing Joke Peel sessions are raw and awe-inspiring.
I woke up with this in my head. My wife says I have a Sweet Pickles moment once a year where I sing the closing refrain:
Smart Moms know how kids’ minds grow
Ministry – Jesus Built My Hotrod
I’m partial to the Psalm 69 edit, but there is no bad cut of this song; this original “Redline/Whiteline Version” was played many a time on WCWM by all my radio chums. Only Gibby Haynes could amp Ministry up from the ridiculous to the sublime.
I noticed in my feed that Rebjukebox had reblogged the re-recorded version of this classic track and, as much as I like that version, I truly love the original. It seems just a touch too slow, and that slight lurching sensation amplifies the fall to her knees brokenhearted aspect of the lyrics. She sways and nearly swoons. So good.
[Note: Bo Diddley is responsible for some of the best music ever, including this track. Other steller editions of this song can be found by Booker T. & the MGs, Junior Wells, and The Starlets (featuring a young Minnie Ripperton). The last is a particular favorite of mine; a close second to Ms. Penn.]
