For me, music in 2010 has been defined by the Ulrich Roth era of the Scorpions.  I grew up with Blackout and Love At First Sting, but never went backwards into their catalog; a string of cheesy ballads like “Still Loving You” put me off the band, and “Winds Of Change” nailed the door shut – or so it seemed.  This year, a good friend pried the door open and showed me the 70s Scorpions.  A nimble, grooving, hard driving band who helped define what would be known as metal.  I really had no inkling of their greatness.  ”Speedy’s Coming” opens their second album – the first with guitarist Roth – Fly Me To The Rainbow.  The four year, four album (plus a smokin’ live one) run is as good as 70s hard rock/metal gets. Astounding.
